I didn't think much would bring me down after the high of last night, but something has.
While I fully understand that not all Jays fans are the type of fans that throw a beer can on the field in the general direction of an opposing player and that not all Jays fans are the type that yell racist trash at opposing players, this was an ugly incident that makes all of us look bad.
These guys shouldn't have to put up with that. And reports of racial slurs being yelled at Jones and Kim are also disgusting. I'm all for heckling the opposition, but leave the sexist, racist and homophobic remarks off your list of acceptable heckles. Adam Jones had a banana thrown at him from the stands in San Francisco. Cut that out, fans. CUT IT OUT.
These guys should not have their safety put at risk or be demeaned when they are simply playing for the opposition. There is a lot of history and tough competition between these two clubs. Kim's homer last week versus Osuna and Encarnacion's homer in the Wild Card game are just the latest chapters in a fierce rivalry.
We all love baseball and without a worthy opponent, there just isn't much left to it.
So I am calling on all Torontonians, Canadians and Jays fans to come together and make a donation to the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore or the RBI Program run through MLB, which has programming in Baltimore. Another option is to make a donation to the Orioles Charitable Fund.
Let's do better.
