September Disaster: The Blue Jays Collapse Versus Rangers

September 15, 2023 by Joanna

I went to my first, and likely only, game of the season yesterday and witnessed the Texas Rangers complete the four-game sweep in this massively hyped series of “important” baseball for the Blue Jays.

The vibe was actively bad. I arrived at 5:30 or so, and I found that the normal buzz that exists in and around the stadium at this time of year was stagnated. I sat in 116R, which is pretty much parallel with first base, and no one seemed that into anything. The third inning felt like it should have been the sixth.

I wrote this note down in the fourth, “They want us to karaoke, yet the crowd is openly hostile and maybe a little bored.”

It was this mood that made me notice the video package the stadium used in-game. Obviously, every pro-sports game has some sort of pre-planned video package, with ads and highlights. The one the Jays produced last night in juxtaposition with the actual reality of what was happening in the game actually fed into the hostility.

The clearest example of this was in the bottom of the seventh: Kirk and Bichette had worked walks around a couple of strikeouts and a pitching change. The game was still within reach. Guerrero sees six pitches, strikes out swinging and the air goes out of the building. Immediately after, as the Jays were headed back to the field at the top of the eighth, there was an ad for Michelob ULTRA featuring Guerrero absolutely massacring baseballs. He could not miss. He was unstoppable.

The juxtaposition between the promise and possibility of the ad and the reality of what had just happened not a minute before was disconcerting to the point of mockery.

The boos got louder, as did the “drunk on Thursday” guys, who raged at every failure.

In the aftermath of the trade, there were whispers that the Blue Jays parted ways with Teoscar Hernández because he wasn’t serious enough. The home run jacket was also retired for the sake of “seriousness”, that the Blue Jays were declaring that “fun time” was over and it was time to focus. If that was the goal, then the Blue Jays should be congratulated. No one would ever argue any of this is fun.

talked all offseason about playing the right way as you traded Latino players for white guys, got rid of the homer jacket, did Reagan era austerity and for WHAT?!?! https://t.co/zTsHlrKtK8

The Atlanta Braves, currently the best team in baseball, were the first team to punch their post-season ticket earlier in the week. So congratulations should be extended to general manager and president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos, whose team looks poised to challenge for their second World Series championship in three years.

I used to belong to a “young professionals” group with Jays Care and one of the events was with an executive with the Blue Jays. I remember it being 2017 because he was talking about Kevin Pillar using a homophobic slur the day before, and dealing with the fallout of that.

I don’t remember his name, but I do remember other bloggers at the time telling me that they had gone out for beers with him and thinking that apparently, I wasn’t cool enough for beers.

He talked about his work and working with the upper management, including things like the challenges of renovating, and that attendance in Toronto was very much tied to how well the team was performing. At one point, he said something along the lines of Shaprio and co.’s goal of making the Rogers Centre “a place to be even if the team isn’t any good.”

I had been asking questions all night, and he had sort of been teasing me about that. And I was on the highway heading home before it occurred to me to ask “Why wouldn’t the team be any good?”

I was reminded of this evening’s conversation when I heard about the stadium renovations happening after the 2022 season and again when I heard about the success of the Atlanta Braves.

Good of Buck and Dan to devote some of the broadcast to talking about the offensive behemoth that Alex Anthopoulos has assembled in Atlanta.#BlueJays

I’m not sure the stadium is at the point of being distracting enough to make us forget about shitty baseball, but I’m sure they can get there.

The Alek Manoah situation got ugly this week, with the Blue Jays announcing through the media properties (notably Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet and the Jeff Blair Show on the Fan 590) which, like the Jays, are owned by Rogers Communications, that Manoah would not pitch again this season.

There were rumours that he didn’t report to Buffalo, and then other rumours that he wasn’t healthy, which were more or less confirmed by Schneider on MLB Network:

“At the current time he feels like he’s not ready to compete so we’re going to respect that and kind of move on from it,” Schneider said. “We’ve been working through every decision with him together as a group and respecting his requests along the way.”

It immediately made my antennae go up. If Manoah was injured and needed to stay behind in Toronto for tests, why not announce that at the time? Did I miss that? Why all the talk about Manoah quitting the team? Why was there talk about him not reporting to the Bisons if there was a legitimate reason (staying behind for tests) for not reporting? Why is it coming out this week? Was it to distract from the terrible Rangers series? To further sink Manoah’s reputation after a disappointing 2023? To somehow bring him to heel?

The Blue Jays have used the Blair show in the past. In 2018, it was starting to become clear that Shapiro and Atkins were not going to go forward with a manager they had inherited. I remember hearing rumours at the time that they floated a rumour that was reported by Blair on his show that John Gibbons wasn’t interested in managing a young team. The front office did this so they could gauge how much of a reputational hit they would take by firing a beloved Toronto figure. It also worked to bring the discussion out into the open, forcing Gibby to make a comment.

Controlling the narrative is just one of the benefits of having an entire media company at your disposal.

Junior Finally Takes the Derby Crown

July 12, 2023 by Joanna

The Homerun Derby is a silly event, as are most events involving feats of strength with no purpose.

Julio Rodriguez dazzled the hometown crowd with 41 homers in the first round. Seattle legend Ken Griffey Jr. was there to crown the winner.

And Vlad Jr., who lost in 2019 despite hitting 91 homers in roughly an hour, took the crown.

Guerrero seemed to be having an absolute ball, but there was a strange general vibe from the ESPN broadcast. It was as if he was some uninvited interloper not worthy of the company. It was downright hostile, and I don’t understand it. Guerrero appears to have a good time, he’s the child of a legendary baseball player who is generally well-respected, and he hits a lot of homers.

I doubted Vlad in the final round because he didn’t get a break between the second round and the final round. But clearly, it was some kind of groove.

AL East Woes Continue as the Red Sox Sweep the Jays

July 04, 2023 by Joanna

Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez were having a conversation during the broadcast of the first game of the Red Sox series. They were speculating why fans on social media didn't seem that enthused about the Blue Jays this year, and had generalized anxiety about the state of the team at the halfway point.

SportsNet put up a graphic with stats saying how good the Jays have been in June the record is excellent.

In the last week, they dominated the Bay area when they took two of three from the Oakland Athletics and then took two of three from the San Francisco Giants. They pitched well and they hit well and it all seemed fine.

And then the Red Sox come to the Rogers Centre for the Canada Day long weekend, and in what has been the pattern for the rest of the season, the Jays completely collapse when it comes to playing their own division. And I realized that this is why there is so much anxiety and concern.

The Red Sox are massively underperforming and had come into that series having a serious crisis. But then the Jays rolled over and acted as a confidence booster. So the fan base can't really get excited about this team because they're never going to advance unless they figure out how to beat teams in their own division. That is where the rivalries are, that is how you advance in the standings directly. The Blue Jays fans are not really going to care if the Jays beat San Francisco all the time but they will be excited if they roll into Yankee Stadium and have a really great series or if they roll into Fenway Park and have a really great series.

And this team doesn't seem able to do that. They play like a playoff team against the rest of the league and then they do this.

It’s hard to get excited.

Also worrying is Jordan Romano's tendency to randomly give up solo home runs in the 9th inning and blow saves for no particular reason. It’s not something to lose sleep over but when it's the third game when you're about to get swept and then your closer gives up a go-ahead dinger. This is compounded when your offence isn't able to muster anything against a relief pitcher who has an ERA over five. That's just not getting the job done and it's frustrating as hell to watch.

The Blue Jays are going to have to do some serious soul-searching to figure out what they can do to start getting some wins against their own division.

A couple of weeks ago the discourse on social media about the All-Star Game was all about how Canadians were flooding the voting and putting Vlad Junior and Bo Bichette in starting positions for the All-Star team and how egregious just that was.

This was all quite amusing — I didn't think that meant anything at all other than an indication of how many fans the Blue Jays have. There is a general assumption that the Blue Jays are a small market team, but that isn’t reality.

But enough concern was drummed up on Twitter that both Guerrero and Bichette lost their starting spots. They both made the All-Star team, as did Merrifield and Gausman.

I will say that Bo Bichette absolutely has absolutely performed well enough to be a starter, and his place was earned and not a reflection of a Canadian bias.

MLB and Pride: 2023

June 02, 2023 by Joanna Cornish

The Dodgers had a flip-flopping bad time over the past couple of weeks. A bad time entirely of their own making.

A few weeks ago, the Dodgers announced that they were going to honour The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a charitable organization that uses Catholic iconography in a camp way to call attention to and raise money for issues facing LGBTQ+, notably safer sex and harm reduction, as well as mental health supports. Essentially, dudes and trans people dress up in drag as nuns and cause a ruckus for charity. It's agitprop and they are a Los Angeles institution.

The Catholic League has long had issues with this group, which has been around since 1979, and when this was announced, various evangelical and other right-wing groups, whose current cause is how drag queens are satanic, made a stink. The Dodgers demonstrated their lack of spine and rescinded the invite.

There was even more of a stink when that happened, the outrage after the rescinding was even louder, and the Dodgers were derided for caving. The Dodgers re-invited and LA Pride, which had pulled out of their event with the Dodgers, were satisfied.

It felt dumb, but at least it was settled.

And then this happened, and I thought, “Well, that’s not at all subtle.”

Join us at Dodger Stadium on 7/30 for Christian Faith and Family Day. Stay after the game to celebrate and be part of a day of worship. Stay tuned for more details. https://t.co/g9QWEYl5FE

— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) May 26, 2023

And, sure enough, it was decidedly not subtle.

“I think we were always going to do Christian Faith Day this year, but I think the timing of our announcement was sped up,” Kershaw told the Los Angeles Times this week. “Picking a date and doing those different things was part of it, as well. Yes, it was in response to the highlighting of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” by the Dodgers.

As if to cleanse Dodger Stadium of sin.

Look at all the sin.

Are they smiling at a baseball game? Alert the elders!

Other players from around the MLB weighed in. Trevor Williams from the Washington Nationals told NBC News,

"As a devout Catholic, I am deeply troubled by the Dodgers' decision to re-invite and honor the group 'The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence' at their Pride Night this year," Williams said in a statement Tuesday. "To invite and honor a group that makes a blatant and deeply offensive mockery of my religion, and the religion of over 4 million people in Los Angeles county alone, undermines the values of respect and inclusivity that should be upheld by any organization."

You are right, Trevor. This religious organization has done nothing to earn anyone’s mockery.

A person has every right to practice their religion, but one can’t argue that this organization hasn’t been cruising for mockery. It's not as if comedy or satire has ever been used in response to trauma. By the way, throwing around “inclusivity” is a nice touch.

The distressing thing about this is that giving in to the outcry isn’t going to stop these people. These are people who live to be outraged and so filled with rage that they want to punish the rest of us.

I was half-finished with these thoughts about the Dodgers when I heard about the Anthony Bass ballyhoo.

I am beginning to suspect that Bass might be an actual idiot. What first led me to suspect Bass’ idiocy was his social media posts earlier in the season about the flight attendant who asked his pregnant wife to clean up around their seats because their small child made a mess. The very last thing people want to hear is the rich complaining about workers in the service industry. That is a no-win, Anthony.

Bass sharing an anti-Target/Budweiser video demonstrated his bigotry and illustrated that Bass is one of those people who gets their news filtered down through the Culture War, a war that exists to mask that a certain faction of the political system has no ideas or plans other than to hold on to power as a means to line their own pockets.

It was also idiotic.

It is particularly idiotic for Bass to post anything about Budweiser as Budweiser is a massive sponsor for the Rogers Centre/Rogers Sportsnet/ Blue Jays. The in-game cutaway spots that Jamie Campbell hosts are sponsored by Budweiser. Campbell sells Budweiser before he talks about a score or a play highlight.

Some comments on Instagram have some fans saying things like, “Can’t he have a difference of opinion?” A person’s right to exist and live in the world is not an opinion.

As James Baldwin put it, "We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist."

Happy Pride Month! We should always be accepting of those who take pride in who they are. Love is love no matter what! 🗣️🏳️‍🌈 pic.twitter.com/jG8goRpE6v

The response of the Blue Jays was notable in its passivity. And remarkably similar to what has been said before. This is what I wrote at the time:
