I Will Try Again To Morrow

Well, slap me silly, that was some weekend for Toronto baseball. It was incredibly exhilarating/horrifying to watch Brandon Morrow put the finishing touches on his masterpiece. Would it have killed you, Evan, to not hit? But I don't really blame him. It's a game, it's competitive, it's 1-0 and the tying run is on base. Plus, Tampa had been shellacked Saturday, were facing a sweep and had already been no-hit twice this season.

It has to be some sort of flaw or hitch in that team, because they are very, very good and on top of the two this season, they were also the victim in Mark Buerhle's 2009 perfect game. And Doc's perfect game was against the Marlins, and Matt Garza threw the first no-hitter in Rays history two weeks ago. Dallas Braden threw his perfecto against the Rays and Edwin Jackson, former Ray, no-hit them, too. The only no-hitter this season that hasn't involved the state of Florida is Ubaldo Jimenez, but he is clearly some sort of freak.

Also sort of freakish? 17 strikeouts. Still more freakishness Vernon Wells' out of control catch to protect the no-hitter. It was so out of control, Vernon dislocated his toe. Hopefully, he relocates it because he has been quietly putting up an awesome comeback season.

During the 9th inning, my knees were shaking and I was making a noise only dogs can hear, and I was reminded of a time my dad snapped at me during the playoffs one year, "If you are going to watch this game, you need to toughen up." I get it from my mother, who found the '93 World Series so stressful she had to leave the room. She missed Joe Carter's homerun by about 10 seconds.

Brandon Morrow is also the subject of much debate over on ESPN's Mariner board. We gave up very little (Brandon League) to get this kid who quite obviously has a tremendous amount of stuff and with Bruce Walton's help has managed to find the strike zone. Alan Ashby said that Morrow still has the "can't throw strikes" reputation around the league. I hope the 17 strikeouts gives him a new rep.
