Rattled Right Now

Johan Santana became the first New York Met to throw a no-hitter. He used 134 pitches to do it, and causing a some alarm coming off his recent shoulder injuries. And to increase the drama, Santana no-hit the St.Louis Cardinals and the game featured a questionable call on a Carlos Beltran foul ball that may or may not have been fair. Beltran is infamous in New York for a called strike to end the NLCS in 2006, sending the St.Louis Cardinals to the World Series. Hating on Beltran became a thing.

Something happened in the clubhouse during an interview about the no-hitter with pitcher R.A. Dickey. And now Mets' fans are playing their new favourite at home game "Name that Mets' Penis!"

Switching gears from yesterday's "Live! Nude! Mets!", to the events of today makes for a very odd transition but here goes.

This has been an intense and upsetting evening. Your baseball team losing two in a row gets put into perspective by ugly events, but before I talk about that, let's talk about actual baseball games.

Watching Boston play baseball just makes me sort of angry, likely because the Jays tend to make stupid errors/judgement calls and basically let the Sox win. Like, back up who you are supposed to back up. Enough with the two out hits. And don't make the third out at third, snuffing out a rally.

“He’s got the green light, but at the same time in some situations we’ve got to shut him down and that’s on me,” said Jays manager John Farrell, who took responsibility for not restraining Lawrie. “That’s on no one else.”

While Lawrie makes ill-advised base running decisions, he does prove wise in critiquing Kyle Drabek.

“I can’t emphasize enough getting strike one over, being able to throw strikes early in counts and being able to be in control,” Lawrie said, when asked about Drabek’s outing. “Because when you get down in counts you have to serve stuff up and sure enough, they hit balls hard … you gotta make pitches in certain situations and I felt like he did a better job as the game went on, but early I think they got us.”

Drabek actually pitched decently.  Well, maybe not decently, but one that can be considered a step in the right direction. I want the walks down post-haste. Walks are a problem for most of the rotation and they are such a waste of energy. Bautista and Mathis contributed homers.

Clearly after making a silly base running decision and accurately accessing his starting pitcher's performance, Brett Lawrie was up for a little shopping at The Eaton's Centre. And Lawrie tweeted this:

Someone, who Toronto Police are still looking for, decided to shoot up the food court. Seven people were shot, and one person was killed. One of the people who was shot is a 13 year old. Beyond the actual crime, I find a few things really interesting. One is that Lawrie actually heard gunshots. He didn't hear that there were gunshots. And two, this is how the story broke for me. This was the first I had heard of it.

Sportsnet got an interview with Lawrie a few hours after the shooting.

We all are.
