Bo
I am in need of a new favorite Blue Jay.
I don't know how the Blue Jays were not able to sign or extend Bo Bichette given that he is a Shapiro/Ross’s first major prospect that has been with the organization for his entire career from youth till now.
And Bichette expressed interest to stay with the Blue Jays at least earlier in the season and I don't know how that fell apart.
I have heard that the Mets came in swept in and basically went over the heads of the Phillies who had a deal in place for Bichette. I don't know why a 40 million a year contract which both can opt out of after one season makes any kind of sense.
That, combined with the Kyle Tucker to the Dodgers deal that is short and highly-paying per season, sends of message about the state of labour in Major League Baseball. It's disquieting because it feels like antipacatory lockout deals. Everybody's trying to get their bag before it all collapses. I don't like it.
I want to know what the Blue Jays offered and I want to know what Bichette’s issue was with it.
I thought originally that the Jays were going to ask him to play second fulltime and he saw himself as a shortstop.
But then I saw that the Mets have Bichette playing 3rd. This is probably not going to work.
Bichette is an elite offensive player, but now that he is gone, I will flat out say he has defensive issues. I don't have numbers on this, but it seemed like Guerrero rescued a lot of Bichette's throws from short. Now it's coming from 3rd and no friendly Vlad on the other end.
Also, I have noticed since his debut, even though Bichette was a marquee Blue Jay, he was very private. no one had seen his new wife in any online space. Weird online social media accounts would say he was getting married and then show a picture of his mom because there were no pictures of his fiancee.
But he signs with the Mets and all of a sudden she's being shown in the New York Post.
Bichette has gotten away with only talking to Hazel Mae or Rosie DiManno and generally not talking to the rest of the media extensively. Bichette was able to deal with his family issue a few years ago without all of that being splashed all over. He is just not going to be able to hide in New York. Because it's freakin’ New York.
There are bigger stars (Lindor/Soto) on the Mets, so he might be able to not be the focus, but Bichette will get raked over the coals if his defense shows itself the way I suspect it will.
Bichette will hit lots and he gets to go play with his good buddy Marcus Simeon, which to me, probably one of the determining factors. But if he's willing to sign a short-term deal with the Mets for a whole bunch of money why could the Blue Jays not offer that?
The mystery of it feels uncomfortable. The Mets are a hot mess of an organization and this deal seemed like a panic move by Steve Cohen after they missed out Kyle Tucker. Also, Bichette (allegedly) left a Phillies deal on the table. The Mets play the Phillies a lot. Those fans will destroy them.
Bo Bichette was an absolute star hitter for the Jays, and they will probably miss his bat in the lineup. He was injured down the stretch in 2025, and still nearly led the league in hits. Bichette's last offensive play was a three-run dinger in Game 7 off of Shohei Ohtani. That is a hell of a way to go out.
