Enjoyed it Pretty Good
Well, that was a scrappy event. Horrible homeplate umpiring + 2 ejections + two homeruns, efficiently pimped + horrible homeplate umpiring (no, that's not a typo) + benches clearing + a quietly kickass Morrow performance = one hell of a ballgame.
Over the last few years, the Jays and Yankees have played each other rough and tough. I don't know why, besides the obvious division rivalry, but they really seem to dislike each other. And it's damn fine entertainment.
Homeplate umpire Jerry Meals had a bullshit strike zone, issued warnings to both benches about intentional plunking and tussling, which sort of instigated a tussle and tossed Yunel Escobar, who somehow verbally traversed both 100 feet of distance and a language barrier to say something to warrant a toss. It was incredibly stupid. Cito thought so, too. Got tossed.
Yankee fans are hilarious. So, a rookie throws at Bautista's head and then gets his back up when Bautista questions his intent, and Bautista is out of line? Yeah, he pimped it a little. But it was his 40th homer and it's his damn ballpark. These are fans that ask for a curtain call when a Yankee successfully ties his shoes.
And on the subject of what Bautista calls "performance enhancing whatever you want to call them", here is a statement of interest.
"I was young. I was stupid. I was naive. And I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time. I did take a banned substance. And for that, I am very sorry and deeply regretful."
That's not a statement from Bautista, but rather from that prancing pony you all jumped up and down over when he hit his 600th homer. And he is hardly the only one from the Yankees. So pot, you are calling the kettle extra, extra black.
We as Jays fans haven't experienced this kind of power in a long, long time. This is King Carlos type power, a sort of power that inspires fear in the hearts of pitchers. I had low expectations for this season after the team let Roy Halladay go, but it has been a season of a lot of fun, a lot of surprises and a lot of sheer joy. If this is rebuilding, I can't wait to see what happens when the team considers it a year to contend.
So Jose Bautista, how did you like hitting your 40th homerun? “Given what had transpired earlier, I enjoyed it pretty good." I enjoyed it pretty good, too.
